Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) is a pass/fail method used to determine whether a respirator properly fits an individual's face and provides an effective seal. Unlike quantitative fit testing, which measures actual leakage, qualitative testing relies on the user's ability to detect a test agent through taste, smell, or irritation.
This type of test is OSHA-approved and commonly used for half-face respirators, including N95 filtering facepieces, in non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) environments.
Respirator fit testing is required for:
Healthcare workers
Construction and manufacturing employees
Laboratory personnel
First responders
Anyone required to wear a tight-fitting respirator for occupational safety
OSHA 1910.134 mandates that all employees wearing tight-fitting respirators must undergo fit testing prior to initial use, and at least annually thereafter
A typical QLFT session takes about 15–20 minutes and includes the following steps:
Medical Questionnaire Review (if
applicable)
Employers must ensure a medical evaluation has been
completed prior to fit testing.
Introduction and Explanation
We'll explain the procedure and answer any questions you
have.
Sensitivity Test
We'll determine your sensitivity to the test agent (usually
Bitrex or saccharin).
Fit Test Protocol
You’ll don your respirator, and we’ll apply the test agent
while you perform a series of exercises:
Normal and deep breathing
Head movement (side to side, up and down)
Talking
Bending or jogging in place
Results and Certification
If no test agent is detected during the exercises, the fit
is considered successful. We’ll provide documentation of
your fit test, valid for 12 months.
Before your appointment:
Do not eat, drink (except water), chew gum, or smoke 15 minutes prior.
Be clean-shaven—facial hair can interfere with the mask seal.
Bring your own respirator if you're being tested for a specific model.
If you're unsure which mask you need, we can help assess during the appointment.
QLFT is suitable for:
N95 disposable respirators
Half-face elastomeric respirators (with filters or cartridges)
Any tight-fitting facepiece where qualitative testing is allowed by OSHA
Note: Full-face respirators and certain types of masks require quantitative fit testing instead.
